Facebook has suspended 5 accounts linked to a campaign to drive voters away from Republican Roy Moore during last year’s Senate race in Alabama. A social media researcher told reporters the campaign was a test of Russian misinformation tactics and too small to influence election results. In a statement, Moore said, “A lot of people and a lot of money went into a gigantic effort to allow a radical liberal Democrat to steal Alabama’s Senate seat.”

According to a statement from Facebook, the company “recently removed five accounts run by multiple people for coordinated inauthentic behavior on Facebook during the Alabama special election.”
The Washington Post and New York Times reported that a social media researcher recognized that during the US Sen. Doug Jones campaign against Republican Roy Moore last year, misleading online tactics were being tested.
